Strobist: Lighting 102 - Position | Review

This week we are wrapping up control number one, lighting position. Other than getting the exposure correct, this is the most basic control. But it is also the foundation for just about any light that you will design.

Flash Distances Diagram

Direct flash follows black line.
Background flash follows blue line.
Bounced fill flash follows red line.

If the aperature is adjusted to keep exposure of the subject the same, the exposure of the background and of the fill will change based on the distance (length of the line). The ratio between the lengths determines the relative exposures.

With a close flash (bottom), background light goes further than the direct light to the subject. However, the fill light goes much, much further.

With a far flash (middle), background and fill light goes further, but not as much further as in the close flash.

Strobist Lighting 102 Position | Distance

Photographed for the Strobist Lighting 102: Unit 1.2 - Position | Distance.

This exercise demonstrates light fall-off on the background based on the ratio of strobe-to-subject distance vs strobe-to-background distance. Undiffused direct light from 580EX, placed increasingly closer to ball (i.e. bright leftmost image has strobe furthest from ball). Top row has light fired from lightstand at 45 degrees above and to the right of the ball, bottom row fired 35 degrees off axis and level with the ball. Triggered with wireless ghetto triggers.

Strobist Lighting 102 Position | Angle

Photographed for the Strobist Lighting 102: Unit 1.1 - Position (Angle).

Undiffused direct light from 580EX on lightstand, at a constant c 1.3m from golf ball, rotated around a variety of angles and shot at three heights, as indicated by the arrows. Triggered with wireless ghetto triggers. Golf ball is sitting above curved white background which extends below the ball. Bounced light from this surface is putting more light on the bottom of the ball that would otherwise be expected from the elevated light positions.
